Maureen O'hara..........................From her first appearances on the stage and screen Maureen O'Hara (b. 1920) was an enthralling actress with her reddish-orange hair, her natural beauty, and the passion she brought to portraying spirited heroines. Whether she was being rescued from the gallows by Charles Laughton (The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1939) falling in the love of Walter Pidgeon against a coal-blackened sky (How Green Was My Valley in 1941) discovering the power of miraculous events with Natalie Wood (Miracle on 34th Street 1947) or a match made in heaven in a duel with John Wayne (The Quiet Man 1952) she charmed audiences with her powerful presence and easy confidence. Maureen O'Hara was the first biographical work on the screen legend known as the Queen of Technicolor. Aubrey Malone follows O'Hara from her youth in Dublin through her rise to Hollywood fame, using new data gleaned via Irish Film Institute productionnotes from movies. Malone is also a bit more in-depth about the actress's friendship with frequent costar John Wayne and her relationship with director John Ford and he addresses the much-discussed issue about whether the screen goddess was a feminist or an antifeminist figure. O'Hara was a film icon in the golden age of cinema, but her penchant for privateness and her habit of making public comments which were in opposition to her personal choices made her an unsolved mystery. This first-ever biography provides an inside look at the woman behind her larger than life persona. Through sifting through the myths that surround her, the book provides an honest assessment of the famous film actress.
